Living Presence Challenge

Day 1 Challenge: The Practice of Presence

“Indeed, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest.” – (Qur’an 13:28)

Choose one activity—prayer, eating, or a conversation you may have—and be fully present. Engage with it as if it were the most important thing in the world. When distractions arise, gently bring your attention back.

Reflect on this:

How do you believe being present will change how you experience the moment? How do you believe it will affect your connection to yourself, others, and God? Write down your reflections after experiencing any moments where you felt fully present.

Tips for Success:

  • Before each prayer, take a deep breath and remind yourself: I am here. I am standing before God.
  • When speaking to someone, truly listen—without thinking about your reply.
  • When eating, savor each bite, being grateful for the nourishment.

Day 2 Challenge: Overcoming the False Self & Polishing the Heart

“Die before you die.” – Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Observe your ego today. Each time you feel the need to defend yourself, prove your worth, or seek validation, pause. Ask yourself: Is this my true self or my false self reacting? Choose humility and sincerity instead.

Additionally, throughout the day, practice intentional remembrance of God, with full presence. Choose one phrase—SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah— to be repeated often, and see each repetition as a moment of polishing your heart.

Reflect on this at the end of the day:

What situations triggered the false self today? How did constant remembrance of God affect your state of mind and heart?

Tips for Success:

  • Say Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from God) whenever you feel the ego creeping in. It is said that istighfar is not just a statement but it’s a state. Don’t just say, I seek forgiveness from God, feel it.
  • When receiving criticism, listen without justifying.
  • Use remembrance of God as a way to recenter yourself in moments of distraction or frustration.

Day 3 Challenge: Surrendering to Divine Will & Embracing Love

“It may be that you dislike a thing and it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing and it is bad for you. God knows, while you do not know.” – (Qur’an 2:216)

Practice surrender today. Each time something doesn’t go as planned, instead of resisting or complaining, say Alhamdulillah and trust in God’s wisdom. Additionally, perform one act of love for your Lord—whether through service, forgiveness, or a kind word—without expecting anything in return.

Reflect on this:

How is peace found in submission to God’s divine will? How does doing acts of love for your Lord impact your heart?

Tips for Success:

  • Begin your day with Rabbi aslimtu nafsi ilayk (O Lord, I surrender myself to You).
  • When facing uncertainty, remind yourself: God’s plan is always better than mine.
  • Offer a silent prayer for someone who challenges you instead of reacting negatively. If you’re not tested in that way throughout the day, pray for someone who has challenged you in the past.
